An S series model is the easiest pocket camera. Pick the S31 if it may get wet, and a P series bridge camera if you want a big zoom without changing lenses.

Which lenses fit Nikon DSLRs like the D80 and D40x?

These cameras use the Nikon F mount. The D70s and D80 have a focus motor in the body, so they also autofocus with older Nikon AF lenses. The D40x has no body motor and only autofocuses with lenses that have their own motor.

Is the Nikon 1 V1 a compact camera?

The Nikon 1 V1 is a compact mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses. It uses the Nikon 1 mount, so it takes 1 Nikkor lenses, or Nikon F lenses with the Nikon FT1 adapter.
