What is the difference between Hi8, Digital8 and MiniDV?

Hi8 and Video8 record analog video on 8mm tape. Digital8 records digital video on those same Hi8 tapes, and many Digital8 camcorders can also play back older Hi8 and Video8 recordings. MiniDV uses smaller digital cassettes and gives the cleanest picture of the three.

Can I use a camcorder to digitise my old tapes?

Yes, a working camcorder is often the easiest way to play old tapes again. MiniDV and Digital8 models can usually connect to a computer through FireWire (also called i.LINK or IEEE 1394). Analog Hi8 and Video8 tapes can be captured from the AV output with a USB video capture cable.

Can I still buy tapes for these camcorders?

MiniDV and Hi8 tapes are no longer widely produced, but unused old stock and used tapes are still easy to find. This collection sometimes includes tape packs as well, so you can start filming straight away.
